Dressing Modestly Is.......

Immodest Women are Mean

It's funny most Christian women agree, modesty is important everyone just seems to have a different definition.  I'll reiterate what I said yesterday, God doesn't want us to sin, I truly believe if we genuinely seek God in this matter He will show us what is modest and what is not.  Our clothing is important to Him, and removing sin from our lives is important to him as well.

My series took a surprising turn after receiving some very unkind comments.  I appreciate how many people reached out to me, in real life and cyber space.  My mother and sister both offered to beat someone up for me, jokingly of course, and a woman from church who reads my blog pulled me aside and told me the sweetest thing.  I even had one cyber friend e-mail me directly just to make sure that the offending comment I mentioned wasn't her's.  It wasn't, but it blessed my heart.

So with great trepidation here are my final thoughts on modesty and I'll even attempt to open up the comments.

  • Dressing modestly doesn't mean you're a "Super Christian." (Proverbs 31:30)
  • Dressing modestly doesn't mean you've got everything else in your life figured out, just your clothes.  (1 Peter 3:3-4)
  • Dressing modestly doesn't mean you've arrived spiritually.  You still might struggle with anger, worry, or a hundred other sinful things.  (Proverbs 11:22)
  • Women who dress modestly shouldn't look down their nose on those who don't but........
  • Christian women shouldn't be afraid to take a stand for dressing modestly. (1 Timothy 2:8-10)
  • Dressing modestly isn't just about skirt length, not wearing or wearing slacks, or embracing the newest fashion trend.
  • Dressing modestly is about seeking God and desiring to honor Him through our clothing. (1Corinthians 10:31)
  • Dressing modestly is about  honoring and respecting our husbands (or father's for those unmarried) wishes in how we clothe our-self.
  • Dressing modestly is about keeping private that which is sacred, and being kind to the men around us by not causing them to stumble. (Matthew 5:28)
  • Dressing modestly................................. (Now it's your turn to fill in the blank)

I'm okay with differing views but just so you know, if your comment even starts to seem a little unkind, it will be deleted before I even finish reading it, so please don't bother.  Also, please remember I and anyone who comments are real people that exist in real life.  An unkind word can hurt, a lot, please be kind.

  2. Thank you for this series! I have always said that woman a should dress the way she would want other women to be dressed around her husband. Great job on the series!

  3. Let me just say I can't believe someone was so mean to you! I have to wonder what's wrong with people, that so many of them seem to seek out blogs they're going to disagree with just so they can make nasty comments. Baffling. Since you asked, modesty, to me, is always a personal thing. And a person can't ever forget that modesty begins in the heart. If your heart seeks modesty, God will lead you to the right clothing. If modesty is not in your heart, you can wear Amish cape dresses, and it won't do much good. Personally, I wear skirts primarily, but I have nothing against women who don't, because for me, the skirts aren't (mostly) about modesty, but a deliberate choice to embrace my femininity. I'm glad you made the point that modest clothing choices does not mean a Christian has "arrived" :). I certainly have not! This is just one of my areas of recent growth. Now, it's been a fair number of years since I deliberately dressed immodestly (ah, the teen years), but I simply didn't consider what I was wearing at all. And as a large-busted woman, I perhaps need to consider it more carefully than my more average-sized sisters. It is SO hard to find modest tops that will stay modest as I go through the "motions" of living. Just putting it on, standing in front of the mirror and going "Yeah, that works" doesn't work, which is a fairly new revelation for me. I'm glad you opened the comments back up. Don't worry about the trolls; they just make themselves look bad, not you. I can completely respect differing viewpoints on modesty, but I can't respect holding up immodesty as a virtue, which is what it sounds to me like your anonymous commentor does (I missed the actual comment), along with simply being mean to others. I pray He changes her heart, in both areas. Keep doing what you do, Kacey. You have a good blog.

  5. Be encouraged, sister! I have in recent years been convicted of not embracing my femininity and of immodesty in my clothing. My oldest daughter (4) has always preferred wearing skirts/dresses, but she's just girly. My conviction to wear more feminine clothing has led me to wear mostly skirts or dresses, but I still wear baggy sweat pants for running. My husband and I are both fine with this arrangement (he loves seeing me in skirts/dresses, but likes me in pajama pants, too). Because we have come to this change(along with others) in our lives, over the past couple of years we have been called everything from legalists, holier-than-thou, cultists, and even that we were heading towards apostasy, and all these comments have come from well-meaning sisters and brothers in Christ. (And you don't even want to know what they think of us homeschooling or biblical manhood and womanhood, lol). Your blog, as well as others, is a special encouragement to many of us who don't have a local body of Christ or a family who understands our convictions, keep it up! My experience has been that by being so countercultural we offend even those in the church just by our presence, and I know that for me in the past, I was offended because deep down I was afraid they were right and I was in error. We have to be loving to our brethren, and yet at the same time cannot compromise our convictions from the Scriptures. That pretty much means some people will never like us, which is hard for any of us to go through, but Christ was despised and rejected by men as were all of the apostles and martyrs, so we're in good company. I know for me it's been hardest when it has come from fellow Christians and especially those within our own families, but Christ has to be first and He is sufficient when all else turn their backs on us. Praying God give you strength and wisdom to stand in His Word and that He would continue to use you to bless others and to bring them to a fuller understanding of His grace and His Word. Love in Christ!

  6. Since you asked for other thoughts, here's something else I thought of. Dressing modestly can be done for the wrong reasons. I believe some ladies dress modestly because they believe it makes them more spiritual. Dressing modestly doesn't MAKE a person Godly, it comes as a result of BEING Godly.

You rock it girl! Those harsh comments are just "fiery arrows" trying to get you to stumble and put down your armor of faith.

  8. I'm right with you on this post, KM. I recently posted about modesty and now one of my friends (of 30 years) is not speaking to me. She assumes that I was writing about her daughter, when I was not. So thanks for taking a stand on this sensitive subject. Keep on keeping on and keep looking up. (Titus 2:13)

  9. You are so right! It is a heart issue. Whether we eat or drink, whatever we do we do all for the Glory of God.

  10. Hi, I am new to your blog, but everything that I have read so far is right on. I completely believe in dressing modestly, but for the glory of God. I truly believe like you said that God will lead you in this area of life. Yes, if you dress modestly it definitely doesn't mean that you have everything figured out. Keep up the good work. Love your blog!!!

  11. I am new to your blog so I had to catch up. I just want to encourage you and applaud you on your posts on Modesty. It is in the bible and that is all that matters. I agree with what you wrote above. Modesty is important as well as our inner fruits. Blessings.

  12. I agree with Kasey and all the comments expressed above. One other thought is--modesty of mind. If our thoughts are not modest it does not matter what we wear on the outside....and I still have to redress my own thoughts now and again. My grown daughters have gently reproved my thinking at times as does God's word. And also-- Thank you (from Kasey's mom)to all the encouraging comments made. Ministry, which is what this blog is, will have to stand against those fiery darts - but oh, how much easier it is when we have an Aaron and a Hur to help hold the shield of faith!

  13. I agree with your modesty post! :) I feel the same ways as you! I haven't read the other posts in your series...but I feel that society has come so far (in the wrong direction) in dress...too much revealing things is distasteful...but you are correct, this doesn't make modest-dressers better than anyone else. We give all glory to God for changing our hearts! :)
