O to grace how great a debtor
daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here's my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.

Robert Robinson

It's terribly comforting to realize I am not the first Christian, nor will I be the last to struggle.
It's also even more comforting to realize how greatly God desires to help us in our daily lives and his absolute willingness to forgive.

Finding Praises With a Heavy Heart

When the heart is heavy, when no words can be found, a hymn sometimes provides solace and peace that our own emptiness cannot. There will be times that we cannot find the words within our own spirit to praise God, but we can still sing the sweet praises that others have shared in the forms of hymns. No Christian remains on the mountain top from the moment they are saved until the moment they are taken home. There will be times of great joy and there will be times of great sorrow. I praise God for the hymns that I can sing when my heart is too heavy to find praises on it's own.

’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
And to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
And to know, “Thus says the Lord!”

O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to trust His cleansing blood;
And in simple faith to plunge me
’Neath the healing, cleansing flood!

Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest, and joy and peace.

I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee,
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more

Just a hymn today.  I've got an infection that has knocked me out of comission.

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
Forward into battle see His banners go!

Refrain:
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.

At the sign of triumph Satan’s host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!
Hell’s foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
Brothers, lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.

Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.
We are not divided, all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity.

Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,
But the church of Jesus constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never ’gainst that church prevail;
We have Christ’s own promise, and that cannot fail.

Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud, and honor unto Christ the King,
This through countless ages men and angels sing.

Peace, Perfect Peace

This hymn spoke to my heart this morning, I hope the words bless you as well.

Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin?
The blood of Jesus whispers peace within.

Peace, perfect peace, by thronging duties pressed?
To do the will of Jesus: this is rest.

Peace, perfect peace, with loved ones far away?
In Jesus' keeping we are safe, and they.

Peace, perfect peace, our future all unknown?
Jesus we know, and He is on the throne.

Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne

A wonderful hymn to sing or teach the kido's Emily Elliot's "Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne." I love that we see Jesus from manger, to grave, to his coming again.  Take a moment today to sing a Christmas hymn.Christmas songs so often stop at the nativity, it's wonderful to sing one's that tells the whole story.

Thou didst leave Thy throne and Thy kingly crown,
When Thou camest to earth for me;
But in Bethlehem’s home was there found no room
For Thy holy nativity.

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
There is room in my heart for Thee.

Heaven’s arches rang when the angels sang,
Proclaiming Thy royal degree;
But of lowly birth didst Thou come to earth,
And in great humility.

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
There is room in my heart for Thee.

The foxes found rest, and the birds their nest
In the shade of the forest tree;
But Thy couch was the sod, O Thou Son of God,
In the deserts of Galilee.

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
There is room in my heart for Thee.

Thou camest, O Lord, with the living Word,
That should set Thy people free;
But with mocking scorn and with crown of thorn,
They bore Thee to Calvary.

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
There is room in my heart for Thee.

When the heav’ns shall ring, and her choirs shall sing,
At Thy coming to victory,
Let Thy voice call me home, saying “Yet there is room,
There is room at My side for thee.”

My heart shall rejoice, Lord Jesus,
When Thou comest and callest for me.

Many Christmas Blessings!

The Messiah and Mashed Peas

I wanted to write my personal testimony for some time now, but I was never sure where to begin.  I was saved as a young girl, and there really isn’t much to tell by way of my “Spiritual Journey.”  However I wanted to share a real part of my heart.  Music has always had a special place in my life, this morning I listened to my favorite musical work and I thought I’d share how it was written, and its impact on me.

A man ravaged by depression, addicted to alcohol, and nearly penniless, sits down to compose a piece of music.  He was given the words and was told to create a masterpiece.  A man ravaged by depression, addicted to alcohol, and nearly penniless, begins to read the words given to him, words taken directly from scripture,  words of hope and promise.  While he reads the words and begins to compose his masterpiece, others in the home hear him weeping, a hopeless man begins to change as the reality of Christ’s Passion washes over him.   Like a man obsessed he begins composing from dawn until dark for weeks and a cold heart begins to warm.  A true miracle happened when George Frederic Handel sat down to write his most celebrated work, “The Messiah.”  It wasn’t the fact that he composed an entire oratorio in a matter of weeks, it wasn’t the musical genius and weaving of the libretto with the melodic lines, it was the very salvation of Handel’s very soul.

It is my firm belief that Handel’s Messiah would lay forgotten if Handel’s heart would not have turned to Christ.  Because Handel was willing to surrender to Christ we became blessed with what I consider the greatest music ever composed this side of heaven.  There are a lot of musical compositions, songs, and hymns which I truly love but in my ever so humble opinion nothing compares to Handel’s Messiah.

I began playing the Messiah this morning as I started my daily cleaning and child wrangling routine.  The familiar strings began playing and something stirred within me, I did not however expect to be emotionally moved by this music today while it was just playing in the background.  Throughout the morning the prophecies of Christ’s coming filled my house, and then the story of his birth.   Many recordings and performances of the Messiah stop here, and end with the familiar Hallelujah Chorus, they miss however the most important parts of the narrative.  After Christ’s coming, the music begins to speak of his death, and a voice with all the sorrow of Mary herself sings of how Christ was despised and rejected.

 As I was feeding my children lunch the words, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain.”  are being sung, and the reality of why the precious baby, the son of God, would come to earth hits me once again.  That perfect child didn’t come to lead a full and happy life, with a wife and family of his own.  That little one wasn’t born to hone a craft and live a fulfilled life in a career that he loved.

That little baby was born so he could die.  That little lamb, was sent to earth knowing he needed to save the world from its sin.  God’s precious son, came so that we might live in his death.  And he truly was worthy to take on our sin.  To take on my sin. As the choir begins to sing the great “Amen Chorus” my heart begins to swell.  It’s as though the instruments and singers on the recording are anticipating the day that they will sing those words in heaven, and my heart begins to anticipate the same.

As the final notes, ring through my home, I begin to weep.  I weep right in the middle of my daily routine because God has once again spoken to me through his words and his music.  All I can do is weep and thank Jesus for the sacrifice he gave, and thank him for saving my soul.  My heart aches from the weight of it all.

Then my youngest begins to fuss because Mommy has taken too long with her next spoonful of food and I’m drawn out of my introspection. As I  look at her smiling face I realize Christ came not only for me but for these precious little ones he has entrusted to me.

I’m entrusted to teach these precious little souls of the greatest reality there ever was, God loves them, and the only way to know Him is by knowing Christ.  When I came to Christ I wasn’t ravaged by depression, addicted to anything, or in financial need.  I was simply a small child who knew Jesus was real and that Jesus wanted me to trust him and accept his forgiveness.  I so desperately desire to teach the same thing to my children and everyone I meet, whether online or in person.

If you don’t have the peace that Christ provides, you, if you don’t know of his sweet forgiveness, it’s only a prayer away. That prayer is as simple as this:

            Dear Lord,
            I know that I am a sinner, but I believe you sent your Son to die for my sins. I also believe that     you raised him from the dead, and ask now to be forgiven of my sins. Thank you Lord for saving me.
            Amen.

There is no greater thing in this world than accepting his forgiveness.  Especially at Christmas time.

ISAIAH 64: 6-8

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

Hallelujah Chorus

I was wondering what to post today when my husband told me about this video.  If you haven't seen it yet, oh my.  This is something that I dream of doing, just standing up in the middle of the food court and singing (actually I think I may have done this on an occasion or two, but I never got any applause, so goes life).  What I like so much about this video however, and it probably wasn't even intended, is the fact that all those Christmas shoppers intent on making their purchases got to experience the real meaning of Christmas smack dab in the middle of their mall.  From a musical stand-point, the sound must have been amazing to have the choir scattered around a whole food court.  I love it!

Thankful For Grace, Then Sings My Soul Saturdays

I am so thankful for His grace.  There are simply no other words.

He Looked Beyond my Faults, by Dottie Rambo.  Hope you enjoy.

Amazing Grace shall always be my song of praise
For it was grace that bought my liberty
I do not know just how He came to love me so
He looked beyond my faults and saw my need

I shall forever lift mine eyes to Calvary
To view the cross where Jesus died for me
How marvelous the grace that caught my falling soul
He looked beyond my faults and saw my need

A Month of Thankfulness, Singing

Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
 Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
 For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
Psalm 100

Isn't it wonderful that no matter what happens in life, no matter what problems enter our homes, that as Christians we always have something to sing about.  No matter how hopeless a situation may seem we can still have joy because the "Lord is good."  Just knowing that, and understanding that our God no matter what is going on, remains good above all else should be a huge comfort to us.

I'm posting at over at the Songs of my Journey Blogroll today, be sure to check out some of the other women's posts, they really are huge blessings!

His Eye is On the Sparrow

Why should I feel discouraged,
Why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart feel lonely
And long for Heav'n and home,
When Jesus is my portion?
A constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches over me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

"Let not your heart be troubled,"
His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness,
I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth
But one step I may see:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted,
Whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing,
When hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him,
From care He sets me free:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He cares for me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He cares for me.
I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches

Be Thou My Vision

Beautiful 8th Century Poetry for praising God today.

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Singing Together, Why I Love The Messiah

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Colossians 3:16

Let your songs of praise be loud and joyful this morning. Allow the words that you sing and learn this morning dwell in you richly. Enjoy singing with your fellow believers.
This is something I posted on facebook about my favorite hymn. When my friend asked what everyone's favorite hymn was initially I couldn't choose but then I remembered something that happened in 2006.

The most beautiful/powerful/intense/precious/memorable (pick and adjective) moment of worship I have ever experienced singing was during my first performance of Handel's Messiah. It hit me during the "Worthy is the Lamb" and "Amen" sections. The true meaning of the words that we had been rehearsing for months came alive in my heart. Then something Holy happened, God literally perfected what we were singing. The parts were interwoven perfectly, balanced with the most perfect orchestration. The chorus was truly lifting its voice and glorifying God in a way I had never experienced before. I've never been able to find a recording that captures this same intensity.

The most powerful thing about this music was that these words (taken directly from scripture) have been sung by Christians for thousands of years, and the music that Handel composed that we were singing that night for hundreds in corporal worship. I was joining the timeless body of Christ: those who were, those who are, and those who will be in singing God's precious praises. The most breath-taking aspect of it all was those words are ripped right from the pages of revelation and are the words we'll be singing for all eternity.

On a side note, there was one time when I got out my Messiah score and wanted to relive the moment, but I couldn't, not on my own. As beautiful as the counterpoint is together just the soprano line by itself is incomplete and not melodic. It's somewhat poignant that I cannot sing my favorite hymn of praise by myself, and must be sung with others.

I have many songs and hymns I love but this one truly is my favorite.

Will you learn along with me? Let's encourage one another.

Musical Thoughts

Last night my littlest was fussing so I just opened up the hymnal and started singing to her. I also finished writing out our church music schedule for the next 2 months. Needless to say I have a lot of songs running through my head this morning.
This morning at church we're singing:

I will sing of my Redeemer- This song was the last hymn of PP Bliss. It was found in his belongings after a train wreck that took both he and his wife's life. PP Bliss initially escaped the wreckage but went back in for his wife saying "If I can't save her I will perish with her."

Redeemed- I had forgotten how much I love this song. The lyrics not only speak of God's saving power but also have so many veiled references to Fanny Crosby's life as well. My favorite verse is " I sing for I cannot be silent, His love is the theme of my song!"

In Christ Alone- God bless the Getty's, they wrote this song because they desired to write modern hymns. This song literally takes you through the life of Christ in 3 stanzas. It's fabulous and another one of my favorites. I have to pace myself or we might be singing this one every week.

God Bless, enjoy Church today.
