Advice to My Sister

In December of last year my sister met a fabulous man who was looking for someone to spend his life with. Today they're getting married!  These are the things I want to tell her on her wedding day.

Jenna,

Pray with your husband twice every day, once when you wake up, and once before you go to sleep at night.  If one of you is already in bed sleeping, wake the other up and say a quick prayer! Keeping a consistent prayer life is incredibly difficult for all married couples, when you commit to praying twice a day, you'll almost always pray once a day.

Bathe your husband in respect in every possible way you can.  Write him notes telling him how much you appreciate his hard work, and how much you truly admire him.

Never complain about your husband when he is there or when he isn't there, it will get back to him and you've made him look bad in someone elses eyes.

Talk about how wonderful your husband is when he is there and when he isn't, it will get back to him and you will have made him look like a prince in someone else's eyes.

Pray for wisdom in every aspect of your marriage, God promises he'll give it.

Be patient with one another, as you learn how you do things.  Just because he puts the salt and pepper in a different place or sorts his laundry in a different way doesn't make it wrong, it's just different.  You're two different people you do things differently, that's OK.  Be sure to preface anything that is a preference, as such, try not to make your husband feel like he's doing something wrong if  he isn't.

Learn from God's lessons each and every day.  Expect to fight as you learn how one another operates, just fight nicely : )

Memorize 1 Corinthians chapter 13, pray it and try and emmulate it in your life.

Extend grace at every turn

Love him in every way you can

Trust in God and lean not on your own understanding

Live your marriage vows every day

Love Your, Big Sister,

I am so happy for you two!

  1. Great advice! I especially liked the advice to pray twice a day. My husband and I pray in the morning...I like the idea of praying at night too.
Hope it's a beautiful day for your sister...have a wonderful day!

  2. Such great advice! I liked the one about taking every opportunity to show respect to your husband. Once you're married and have children, showing respect take a conscious decision. It doesn't just happen! :-)
