Teaching Ivy Scripture

One day while reading One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish to my then 18 month old I started omitting words as I went, and Ivy filled them in, almost perfectly.  I picked up another book we read frequently and started leaving out words, and she filled them in with her cute toddler speech.  At first I was really amazed that she had absorbed so much from our reading time together, then I got really convicted.  Without even trying I had hid the words of these children's books in her heart, but what scripture had I taken the time to teach her?  Then I got really convicted when I realized that I had all these books memorized too but I hadn't been taking time to memorize the Word of God.

Since then I've been trying to teach Ivy scripture passages the same way she learned One Fish Two Fish reciting them over and over and eventually omitting words.  We've worked on the 23rd Psalm, The Lord's Prayer, John 3:16 and some others.  They've taken awhile for her to learn (she is only two after all) but little by little God's word is being hid in her heart.

The other morning my husband was reading Psalm 119 to us before breakfast, and he suggested to Ivy that she learn verse 105, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path".  We've been working on it for 2 days now but every time I ask Ivy to say the scripture with me it turns into, "Thy word is a lamp unto my toes and a light unto my feet"

She get's so excited to say the word Toes! that I almost hate to correct her : )  I've tried recording her saying scripture but she always get's wiggly and focuses on the camera, if I get a cute clip I'll try and share.  It really is the cutest thing in the world and certainly makes this mama smile.

  1. Kasey, How precious that you are teaching your little girl Scripture. They can learn at an early age but most mothers don't take or have the time. I remember teaching one of mine the books of the Bible at 15 months. She learn several.
Yes, we do need to hid the scripture in our own hearts. It will always be there when you need it.

I can just hear her saying "A lamp unto my toes and a light to my feet." She probably grabs her feet while she says it. Precious.

  2. We're working on the books of the Bible too! And when Ivy says a lamp unto my toes, she sticks her foot up in the air and just grins. : )
